HSMTMTS: Ricky’s story arc as told by his songs. From I Think I Kinda You Know to Love You Forever (Part 1).

I’ve been thinking about how every song Ricky has performed on the show (my focus will be mostly on the original songs) tell us what his journey has been in the course of the show.

Ricky’s journey has been about changes and the future, leaving his childhood behind, how his parents relationship affects his own as well as the ability to be emotionally open. How he viewed love at the start of the show vs how he views love now. About new starts. About how happiness is a process and something he also needs to create for himself. And his songs reflect this journey very well. For this post. I’ll focus on Season 1 and Season 2 for Part 1.

ej playing hans and singing love is an open door with gina in a fantasy like duet was already crazy. pair with 305 and it’s even crazier.

anna jumps into this relationship with hans because she is trying to find her person and love. the whole song is about a person that is so right for you after trying before and finally finding someone who they feel in sync with. the irony being that they haven’t been in sync the whole summer. (and even before this season if we’re all being honest)

and just like the way hans ends up disappointing anna after looking so perfect for her, ej does the same thing to gina. and both end up making their respective love interests feel like they’re not enough.

and then enters the what do you know about love duet. kristoff asks anna if she even knows hans full name and anna shows to be clueless. just for later on to be revealed that gina is just as clueless about ej’s full name.

it’s a song about love not being easy and perfect and you need to work in your relationship. which is the complete opposite of ej and gina’s relationship.

anna says “love is the one thing that has zero complications” which parallels to gina having to run away from a love that seemed more complicated than it should’ve been for her and have her settle for a love that looks so straight forward to her.

gina is learning that love will never be easy and true love does need effort from both parts.

a parallel i also love is how quickly anna was to marry hans with how quickly gina is presumably ready to say “i love you” to ej. both enchanted with the idea of love only to be disillusioned with the reality of it. which comes full circle with the liaod duet being a fantasy.

joondaya wow this was insightful I did not even notice the parallels hsmtmts rina
